The Capital Gains Tax (CGT) discount, a policy that has been under scrutiny, has disproportionately benefited the wealthy, according to Oxfam Australia's findings. The report reveals that a staggering 50% of the CGT discount went to just 24,000 individuals, who made over $1 million in 2022-23. This amounts to an average of $271,000 per person, a figure that is almost 1500 times the benefit received by the average worker. The CGT discount, Oxfam's CEO, Jennifer Tierney, argues, exacerbates inequality by favoring the nation's wealthiest. She emphasizes the unfairness of providing billions in tax breaks to a select few while ordinary workers pay taxes on every dollar earned. The analysis further highlights the policy's bias towards higher-income earners, with the top 10% of earners receiving 82% of the total benefit, and the top 1% capturing almost 60% of the savings. This has led to concerns about rising house prices and housing affordability, making it even more challenging for renters and younger Australians to own homes. The Greens Senator, Nick McKim, has labeled the CGT discount the 'most unfair tax rort in the country.' As speculation mounts about potential tax reforms in the May 12 federal budget, there is a growing call for the government to address this issue. The Housing Industry Association, among others, has urged the government to prioritize housing supply, warning that the housing shortage is a structural economic challenge. Polling conducted by YouGov for Oxfam Australia reveals a widespread concern about the widening inequality gap, with 73% of Australians expressing worry and 68% supporting the use of additional tax revenue to reduce poverty through measures like housing and income support.
