Exciting changes are underway at Disney's Magic Kingdom, but one transformation is sparking curiosity and a bit of controversy among park enthusiasts: the extensive refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Is this beloved ride getting a much-needed upgrade, or are we losing the classic charm that made it a fan favorite?
As of January 9, construction walls surrounding the attraction have expanded significantly, now stretching nearly to the Frontierland Station of the Walt Disney World Railroad. This expansion coincides with ongoing train testing, a process we've observed for several months. But here's where it gets controversial: while some fans are thrilled about the promised updates, others worry that the ride's nostalgic appeal might be compromised. What do you think—is progress worth the risk of altering a classic?
Walking toward the closed attraction, our reporter spotted trains on the track, a sight that has become increasingly common. Comparing photos from December 2025 to today, it’s clear the construction zone has grown, even affecting nearby amenities. The popcorn kiosk next to the entrance is now off-limits, though another kiosk along Frontierland’s main walkway offers the same snack. And this is the part most people miss: the removal of scaffolding late last year suggests crews may soon focus on guest-accessible areas of the mountain, signaling a potential shift in the refurbishment timeline.
Beyond the walls, progress on the future Piston Peak is evident. A temporary wood structure previously seen in the area has been replaced with concrete pouring, hinting at significant structural changes. From the vantage point of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, a dirt path with tracks may soon become another concrete foundation. Meanwhile, the former popcorn cart location appears to have been permanently removed, and large dirt piles near the exit suggest additional construction is underway.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad received new tracks early in the refurbishment, and external construction hints that the ride itself may be nearing completion. However, work on the entrance and guest-facing areas remains unfinished. Disney has teased an updated opening scene with a reimagined Rainbow Caverns, but details about other new scenes are still under wraps. Could these changes redefine the ride experience, or will they fall flat?
The refurbishment’s opening timeframe, announced late last year, has fans eagerly anticipating the ride’s return. But the question remains: will the new bells and whistles enhance the adventure, or will they overshadow the original thrill? Watch our full ride POV from before the closure to relive the classic experience.
